The story
before the object.
The Yangliuqing print trade developed in the late Ming period and flourished during the Qing dynasty. Located near Tianjin's waterways, the town became a major centre for New Year pictures. Its practice combines woodblock printing with hand painting, bringing repeatable outlines and individual brushwork into the same picture.
Historical source (Chinese) ↗What to look for
An outline is not the end of the work. Printing and painting contribute different qualities: structure from the block, variation from the brush. The familiar festive feeling is created through composition, colour and subject together.
The images interpret the material and mood. They are not documentation of a particular maker’s work or a technical reconstruction.

A place in your life
Make room for a hopeful year
Putting up a new picture is a small way to begin again. You can make the ritual your own: choose a scene that expresses what you hope to bring into your home, then colour it with someone who shares that home. The picture becomes a record of that conversation.
A contemporary invitation from the studioFrom looking to making
Colour a wish for the year ahead
Start with a prepared line print and a limited palette. Try the colours on scrap paper before painting. This introductory colouring activity is one part of a wider tradition, not a lesson in carving or printing a complete block.
A finished piece to keep
Small art prints, seasonal cards and wall pieces.
An experience to develop
A preprinted outline for hand-colouring, or a separate supervised printing experience. Colouring a print is only one part of the wider craft.
Through an illustrator’s eyes
Contemporary visual stories, palettes and clear context for traditional symbols.
These are development ideas. Products, kits and video classes are not currently offered for purchase.
