Two colours.
One small beginning.
Try a simple over-and-under weave using two colours of paper. This original introductory exercise is inspired by the idea of paper weaving; it does not reproduce the traditional Yongchun process.

- Choose a pair
One sheet becomes the base. The other becomes your weaving strips.
- Leave a border
Cut parallel slots in the base while leaving the outer border connected.
- Over, then under
Weave each strip through the slots. Reverse the pattern on the next row.
- Make it yours
Straighten, secure the ends and turn your work into a card.
03 / Our approach
Tradition, with room
for your own hand.
China, by Hand is an independent craft exploration project, bringing an illustrator’s eye to Chinese making traditions. We begin with the material, the regional story and what a first-time maker can actually do.
Heritage belongs to specific practices and communities. A modern activity inspired by a tradition is not automatically an authentic example of that craft. Each entry links to a source; heritage status refers to the named practice, not to a product certification.
Sources & collection notes
Compiled on 14 October 2026. This selection draws on China’s national representative list and identified provincial or municipal records. It is not an official directory or a claim of partnership with the listed makers.
STUDIO NOTES / FILMS IN THE MAKING
Watch a little wonder take shape.
Real studio films are in preparation. Explore three stories we are planning to tell; the finished films will appear here.
01 A flower begins with silk
Follow the thread from loose silk to a small wearable flower.
Ask the studio →02 Your first flower, one step at a time
Meet the materials and tools through a real instructor’s demonstration, starting with a single petal.
Ask the studio →03 One flower. Three ways to wear it.
Explore a flower at the collar, in the hair and on a gift. Final designs depend on confirmed samples.
